so much joy it hurts: Love, Matthew Dickman -

We fall in love at weddings and auctions, over glasses
of wine in Italian restaurants
where plastic grapes hang on the lattice, our bodies throb
in the checkout line, bookstores, the bus stop,
and we can’t keep our hands off each other
until we can–
so we turn to rubber masks and handcuffs,…

Now we will count to twelve
and we will all keep still.

This one time upon the earth,
let’s not speak any language,
let’s stop for one second,
and not move our arms so much.

It would be an exotic moment,
without rush, without engines,
all of us would be together
in a sudden strangeness.

Fishermen in the cold sea
would do no harm to the whales
and the man gathering salt
would look at his torn hands.

Those who prepare green wars,
wars of gas, wars of fire,
victories without survivors,
would put on clean clothing
and would walk alongside their brothers
in the shade, doing nothing.

What I want should not be confused
with final inactivity:
(Life alone is what matters,
I want no truck with death.)

If we were not so singleminded
about keeping our lives moving,
and for once could do nothing,
perhaps a great silence
might interrupt this sadness
of never understanding ourselves
and of threatening ourselves with death,

Perhaps the earth can teach us
as when everything seems dead
and later proves to be alive.

Now I will count to twelve
and you keep quiet and I will go.

“I’m (expletive deleted) starving.” — Celebrity chef Mario Batali • Discussing the diet he’s currently on — he’s eating like he’s on food stamps (an average of $1.48 per meal, or $31 per week) in protest of potential cuts to the federal food stamps program. His family was nice enough to join him in what he calls a conversation starter about being hungry in the U.S. Unlike most people on food stamps, he knows ways to make the best of a bad situation, smartly sticking to foods like lentils, apples, rice, beans, peanut butter and jelly. But the problem is, eating good on a diet like this is tough, so many do not. Think his family’s experiment will be effective? (via shortformblog)
